VCF 9.0Intermediatespecialist⏱ 75 min

Objectives

  • Use Avi application analytics to isolate an application performance regression.

Prerequisites

VCF lab environment deployed and operational

Lab Environment

Standard VCF lab environment for Avi Load Balancer 30.x Specialist

Tasks

Task 1 Lab B5: Avi L7 Analytics & End-to-End Troubleshooting

Use Avi application analytics to isolate an application performance regression.

Step 1

Enable per-VS client logging (significant log mode) and real-time metrics.

Step 2

Introduce artificial latency on backend servers (tc netem) and observe.

Step 3

Use Avi's end-to-end breakdown (client RTT, TLS, app response) to pinpoint.

Step 4

Export HAR + PCAP for packet-level evidence.

Step 5

Correlate with VCF Operations NSX flow data to confirm root cause.

Validation Gate

Common Errors

Not using Avi analytics to identify application performance bottlenecks
Fix: Avi provides L7 analytics: end-to-end response time breakdown (client RTT + server response time + data transfer time). A high server response time indicates backend application issues, not LB issues. Use analytics to point troubleshooting at the correct layer — Avi vs application server vs database.
Ignoring Avi health score degradation alerts
Fix: Avi health score combines: performance (response time), resource (SE CPU/memory), security (WAF events), and anomaly metrics. A score drop from 100 to 80 may indicate: increased latency, SE resource pressure, or security events. Investigate the specific component contributing to score degradation.
Not correlating Avi logs with application and infrastructure logs
Fix: Avi logs show the LB perspective (client request, backend selection, response code). Application logs show server-side processing. Infrastructure logs (vCenter, NSX) show underlying resource health. Correlate all three by timestamp to diagnose end-to-end issues.

Cleanup / Restore

• Revert to snapshot if needed

Design Reflection (VCDX)

Avi analytics and troubleshooting shows operational maturity in application delivery. VCDX designs should include LB monitoring, health scoring, and end-to-end troubleshooting methodology.

⚠ Known Pitfalls (from Community KB)

Blaming the load balancer for high response times when Avi analytics clearly show the delay is in server response — check analytics before escalating.
Not setting up log correlation between Avi, application, and infrastructure — makes cross-layer troubleshooting impossible.
