Lab NN4: Edge Node Failover Scenarios Matrix

VCF 9.0Intermediatevcap-advanced⏱ 75 min

Objectives

  • Build a complete failure matrix for NSX Edge cluster and measure RTO per failure class.

Prerequisites

VCF lab environment deployed and operational

Lab Environment

Standard VCF lab environment for Advanced VCF 9.0 Networking (NSX & Advanced Routing)

Tasks

Task 1 Lab NN4: Edge Node Failover Scenarios Matrix

Build a complete failure matrix for NSX Edge cluster and measure RTO per failure class.

Step 1

Document 10 failure modes: Edge VM crash, ESXi host loss, network uplink failure, BGP session flap, DPDK core hang, etc.

Step 2

Simulate each failure and measure RTO with steady iperf3 traffic.

Step 3

Measure for both VCF 5.2 (NSX 4.2) and VCF 9.0 (NSX 9.0.x) Edge clusters.

Step 4

Identify which failures exceed design RTO and which design changes help.

Step 5

Produce an operations runbook with detection + recovery per failure class.

Validation Gate

Check: Verify lab completion

Expected: Lab exercise completed successfully

Common Errors

Not testing Edge failover under realistic traffic load
Fix: Edge failover during zero traffic is trivial. Under production load, failover involves: state sync to standby, traffic blackhole during switchover, BFD/BGP reconvergence. Test with traffic generation tools (iperf3, hping3) during failover to measure actual impact duration.
Edge VM anti-affinity not configured
Fix: Both Edge VMs (active/standby) on the same ESXi host means a single host failure takes down both Edges. Configure VM-VM anti-affinity rules: Edge-1 and Edge-2 must run on different hosts. Verify with DRS rules in vCenter.
Not documenting failover matrix for all failure scenarios
Fix: Create a matrix: row = failure type (host failure, NIC failure, Edge VM crash, network partition), column = impact (traffic disruption duration, data plane impact, control plane impact, recovery action). This matrix is invaluable for operational runbooks and VCDX defense.

Design Reflection (VCDX)

Edge failover scenarios are common VCDX defense questions. A documented failover matrix demonstrates systematic failure analysis. Panelists expect specific failover timing and data plane impact for each scenario.

⚠ Known Pitfalls (from Community KB)

Testing failover without traffic — zero-traffic failover tells you nothing about production impact.
Forgetting Edge VM anti-affinity — both Edges on the same host is a common SPOF.
